| | | Midlife changes, midlife challenges. | | Menopause is a time in a woman's life when menstrual periods cease (stop). Menopause is defined as the ending of menses (a period) for one year. This usually happens at an average age of 51, but can occur as early as 45 or as late as 55. The cause of menopause is not known, but when it occurs, the ovaries no longer respond to stimulating hormones, and estrogen levels decrease. Fertility declines and menstrual cycles may be erratic with a diminished menstrual flow, with eventual total ending of menses (periods).
Because of the decreased estrogen many women experience urinary difficulties, hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness and painful intercourse. Women who have these symptoms often find relief by using Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The decision to begin HRT is a personal one and your health care provider can take time to talk to women about menopause and the decision to start HRT. |
