| | Denial of Benefits Bill SB 567 |
| | | | | |
 | SB 567 would mandate citizenship verification for application to any public assistance programs administered by the Department of Health and Family Services or the Department of Workforce Development (including SeniorCare, Food Share, state SSI supplements, W-2, and child support establishment and enforcement).
This is another effort to punitively target non-citizens even though there is no evidence of illegal participation in these programs. It creates a hurdle for all applicants to these programs and may result in loss of access for those who are eligible.
The proposed law would require documentation of citizenship in all cases. The bill does not specify what documentation would be necessary but it could be as onerous as the recently passed federal law which is expected to require either a passport or a combination of a birth certificate and state-issued picture ID. |
