FDA Grants OTC Status to Plan B - 08/24/06

On August 24, after almost three years of delay, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agreed to allow women aged 18 and older to buy Plan B emergency contraceptive pills at a pharmacy without a prescription.

Duramed, a subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals, plans to introduce the dual status Rx/OTC version of the product before the end of the calendar year and will make Plan B available with a rigorous labeling, packaging, education, distribution and monitoring program through CARE Program. OTC vs. BTC "Behind-The-Counter"

When the FDA announced that Plan B emergency contraception would be available "over the counter," it's important to clarify that it'll really be "behind the counter" because of the drug's 18-and-over age restriction.

New Plan for Plan B

Pharmacies offer 'behind the counter' service
From the National Women's Law Center: What can you do to make sure women have access?

First, if you hear of any problems with access to Plan B®, let us know. Call 1-866-PILL-4-US. Keep pushing for laws that protect patient access: EC in the ER laws, laws limiting pharmacists refusals, and laws that allow pharmacists to prescribe and dispense EC, including for women under 18, without a prescription from a doctor. Also, keep up the public education on Plan B®: it is not the abortion pill and will not work if a woman is pregnant; it is most effective within 12 to 24 hours of unprotected sex but can be taken up to 120 hours; and women should have it in advance in case of contraceptive failure. Advocates can encourage local pharmacies to stock Plan B®, use positive publicity to support those who do, and identify any who refuse.
